Saltwater System Repair
A salt chlorinator is a small system with a short list of things that can go wrong: the cell, the control board, the wiring between them, or the salt level itself. Most “salt system problems” are one of those four, and the fault code — when there is one — usually points to the right one. Saltwater system repair is about confirming the actual cause and fixing it, not chasing a code in the dark.
The common failures
The salt cell
The cell is the consumable heart of the system. It builds up scale over time, its output drops, and eventually it fails. A cell that’s past its life is the most common reason a salt pool “stops making chlorine” — even though the system itself is fine. Cleaning and, when it’s time, replacing the cell is a core part of keeping a salt system working.
The control board
The board manages the cell, reads the salt level, and drives the output. A board fault can show up as a random error code, a system that won’t start, or output that’s off. Board issues are less common than cell issues, but when they happen they’re usually clear-cut once diagnosed.
Wiring and connections
The connections between the cell and the board, and the power to the system, are a class of their own. A corroded connection or a loose terminal can mimic a cell or board fault. Checking the connections is part of a proper diagnosis — it’s the cheapest thing to get wrong and the easiest to fix.
Salt level
Not a repair so much as a maintenance item, but a wrong salt level shows up exactly like a system fault: the chlorinator can’t make the chlorine it’s supposed to, and the panel may flag it. Confirming the salt is in range is the first step in most salt system diagnoses.
Reading a fault code
Salt systems are unusually good at telling you what they think is wrong. A fault code is a genuine starting point — it narrows the diagnosis to the cell, the board, or the circuit. But a code is the system’s best guess, not a verdict. A code that says “cell fault” can be a connection; a code that says “salt low” can be a sensor. The repair is confirming what the code is actually pointing at.
What the repair confirms
- The salt level is in the working range.
- The cell is producing — or the board is driving it correctly.
- The connections are clean and secure.
- The output is verified after the fix, not just the part swapped.
