Pool Filter Repair

A pool filter has two jobs: keep the water clear, and do it without restricting flow. When one of those fails, the system shows it — rising pressure, falling flow, water that won’t get clear, or a leak at the tank or the valve. Pool filter repair covers the mechanical side of the filter: the housing, the valve, the gaskets, and the internals that keep it sealed and flowing.

What filter repair covers

Housing and tank

Filter tanks are plastic, and plastic ages — UV exposure, pressure cycling, and the elements in the water all take a toll over the years. Cracks, a weeping seam, or a lid that no longer seals are housing issues, and they’re usually more straightforward to fix than they look.

Multi-way valve

The valve is what routes water through the filter and back. A worn valve handle, a stem that’s starting to leak, or a position that doesn’t hold are common valve issues. Because the valve sits on the flow path, a bad seal here shows up as both a leak and a pressure problem.

Gaskets and seals

The gasket between the tank and the valve, and the seals inside the housing, are the parts that most often fail first. They’re inexpensive, they’re the usual source of a “filter leak,” and replacing them is one of the more common filter repairs there is.

Internals, by filter type

  • Cartridge — the cartridge element and the basket it sits in. See filter cleaning for the media side.
  • DE — the grid, the laterals, and the blinders. A damaged grid or a broken lateral is a DE-specific repair.
  • Sand — the sand bed and the laterals that collect filtered water. A broken lateral is a classic sand-filter repair.

Pressure and flow, the real symptoms

Most “filter problems” are really flow problems. A filter that’s restricted — by a loaded media, a bad valve, or a leak the system is compensating for — shows up as rising pressure and falling flow. The repair is whatever is actually restricting the path, and the diagnosis is confirming which one it is. A gauge reading is a clue, not a diagnosis; tracing the restriction is.

Frequently asked questions

Not always. The most common leak sources are the gasket between tank and valve, and the valve stem. We confirm where it’s actually leaking before any repair.

Usually the media loading up, or a restriction in the valve or plumbing. Cleaning the media is the first step; a persistent rise points to the valve or internals.

No. Cleaning restores the media and flow. Repair addresses the housing, valve, or internals. See filter cleaning.

Often it’s hard to tell from the symptom alone — both show up as flow problems. That’s what the diagnosis is for. See pool pump repair.
