Pool Maintenance

Cleaning a pool and maintaining a pool are two different things. Cleaning removes what’s already there. Maintenance is what keeps the water, the system, and the equipment in a state where problems don’t get the chance to start.

What “maintenance” actually covers

Water chemistry

Maintenance starts with water that’s balanced across the parameters that matter: sanitizer level, pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, and stabilizer. These don’t move independently — a shift in one pulls the others with it. Proper maintenance means checking and adjusting them together, over time, so the water stays in a stable range rather than being corrected in spikes.

Sanitation

Clear, comfortable water is a function of effective sanitation. That means the sanitizer is actually working — which in turn depends on pH being in the right band, alkalinity being stable, and circulation being adequate. When any one of those is off, sanitizer efficiency drops and the water becomes more fragile.

Filtration

The filter is what keeps the water clear once it’s been treated. Maintenance includes watching filter condition, pressure, and flow, and addressing restrictions before they degrade clarity. A well-maintained filter works quietly; a neglected one shows up as cloudy water and higher energy draw.

Circulation

Circulation is the thing most owners don’t think about until it fails. Water that doesn’t turn over properly creates dead spots where algae and contaminants settle. Pump and flow performance is part of the maintenance picture, not an afterthought.

Water level

Sounding trivial, water level is a real maintenance item. Too low and the skimmer loses prime and the pump can cavitate. Too high and water spills over the coping. Keeping level in the right band is part of a well-run system.

Equipment observation

Pumps, filters, heaters, valves, and controls all age. Maintenance means looking at them regularly and catching the early signs — a bearing starting to go, a seal weeping, a pressure reading drifting — before they become an emergency. This is how small, inexpensive fixes stay small.

Algae prevention

Algae is rarely a mystery. It’s usually a combination of weak circulation, a chemistry imbalance, and an opportunity (debris, a stretch of low sunlight, a period of neglect). Consistent maintenance removes the conditions algae needs, which is why a maintained pool stays clear and an unmaintained one doesn’t.

Maintenance versus just cleaning

A pool that’s only cleaned will look fine for a day and then start to drift: chemistry wanders, the filter loads up, and the first algae bloom shows up in a corner. A pool that’s maintained stays in a stable state, so the cleaning is easy and the water is reliable.

That’s the difference our service is built around. See weekly pool service for the recurring routine, and pool chemical service for the water-balance side in detail.

Properties with both a pool and a spa benefit from a single coordinated routine — see pool & spa maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Cleaning is the physical work — skimming, brushing, vacuuming. Maintenance adds water chemistry, filtration, circulation, and equipment observation. Most complete service routines include both.

By keeping the conditions algae needs in check: effective sanitation, adequate circulation, stable chemistry, and debris removed before it settles. It’s a continuous process, not a one-time fix.

Yes. Pumps, filters, heaters, and controls are observed on visits, and early signs of trouble are reported to you. When repair is needed, see our repair services.

At minimum with every service visit, and more often after heavy use, rain, or a wind event. See how often pool water should be tested.
