Pool Cleaning

A clean pool is more than clear water — it’s a surface that’s been properly skimmed, a waterline that’s been brushed, a floor that’s been vacuumed, and baskets that were emptied before flow was ever restricted. Pacific Pool & Spa Pros treats pool cleaning as a complete process, not a single task.

The cleaning process, end to end

Skimming

Leaves, seeds, pollen, and insects come off the surface first. Removing them while they’re floating matters: once debris sinks, it decomposes, clouds the water, and loads the filter with material that’s far harder to remove.

Brushing

The waterline is where film builds up fastest — a line of scale and organic residue that makes even a clear pool look dated. Brushing the waterline and tile keeps finishes looking sharp and prevents staining that later requires aggressive cleaning.

Vacuuming

When debris reaches the floor, it’s vacuumed out as part of the routine. A pool that’s skimmed but never vacuumed ends up with a “settled dust” look that no amount of chemicals will fix.

Basket and strainer care

Skimmer and pump baskets are emptied and checked on each visit. Clogged baskets restrict flow, which reduces filtration and can strain the pump — small neglect with outsized consequences.

Routine cleaning versus one-time cleanup

Most of our cleaning work is recurring: a scheduled visit that keeps the pool in a clean state continuously. That’s the opposite of the “rescue” model, where a pool accumulates a season of debris and then needs a deep, chemical-heavy cleanup.

Routine cleaning is less invasive on the water and the equipment. It uses fewer chemicals, puts less load on the filter, and keeps the pool in a state where a weekend swim is simply available — not something you have to plan around.

If your pool is already in a rough state, that’s a different job. Green pool cleanup and restoration is assessed first, then handled with a plan you’re comfortable with.

Environmental debris is a constant

Pools in our service area collect debris all year. Coastal sites get salt air and coastal vegetation; canyon and hillside locations get oak and eucalyptus; Santa Ana season can load a pool with dust and seeds overnight. None of this is avoidable — but all of it is manageable with a consistent cleaning routine that catches it before it becomes a problem.

What clean actually looks like

  • Clear water with no visible particles on the surface or floor
  • A sharp, clean waterline with no film or ring
  • Tile and steps free of staining and scale
  • Skimmer and pump baskets clean and unrestricted
  • Water that feels smooth and comfortable, not rough or itchy

Pool cleaning is one part of complete pool maintenance — the other part is water chemistry and equipment care, which is what keeps the clean state stable between visits.

Frequently asked questions

Weekly is the standard cadence for residential pools in our area. Heavier debris load or bather load may call for a second visit.

Yes. Waterline and tile brushing is part of the cleaning process, and it’s what keeps finishes from staining.

Cleaning is the physical work — skimming, brushing, vacuuming. Maintenance also covers water chemistry, filtration, circulation, and equipment observation. See pool maintenance.

That’s a restoration job, not routine cleaning. Start with green pool cleanup — we assess first, then restore.
