Pool Pump Repair
The pump is the heart of the system — it’s what moves water through the filter, the heater, and back to the pool. When it starts to fail, the whole system feels it: flow drops, the water stops turning over, and clarity suffers. Pool pump repair is usually one of a few specific failures, and it’s one of the most cost-effective to address early.
The symptoms that point to a pump
- Noise. A healthy pump is quiet. Grinding, rumbling, or a whine that’s getting louder is usually a bearing starting to fail. A gurgling or cavitation sound points to a prime or flow issue.
- Heat. A pump that’s noticeably hot to the touch is working harder than it should — often a bearing or a flow restriction.
- Loss of flow. Pressure dropping across the system, or the pool simply not turning over, is a classic pump or impeller symptom.
- Moisture. A wet spot or mineral deposit under the pump usually means a seal is weeping. Left alone, water gets to places it shouldn’t.
- Short cycling. A pump that starts and stops repeatedly is often an electrical issue — a start capacitor or a control problem — rather than the motor itself.
What pump repair covers
Bearings
The most common pump failure. Bearings wear over time, especially in a climate where the pump runs a lot. A failing bearing is cheap to fix and expensive to ignore — once it seizes, it typically takes the motor with it.
Seals
The shaft seal keeps water out of the motor. When it weeps, moisture reaches the windings. Replacing a seal is one of the most common and most worthwhile pump repairs there is.
Impeller
The impeller is what moves the water. Debris, wear, or a crack can reduce its efficiency and drop the system’s flow. A clean, intact impeller is a basic requirement for good circulation.
Electrical
Start capacitors, windings, and connections are a separate class of pump issues. A pump that hums but won’t turn is very often an electrical failure, and it’s usually more straightforward than a mechanical one.
Why early is cheap
The pump is one of those components where the early repair is a fraction of the late one. A bearing job done when the pump first starts to sound off is a small fix. The same bearing ignored for a season is a motor replacement. Because our technicians are on-site regularly, a lot of pump issues are caught in that early window — and that’s one of the quiet benefits of pool maintenance.
