Pool Leak Detection
A pool losing water faster than evaporation is doing something wrong — and the first, most important question is where. Is it the pool shell, the plumbing, or the equipment? Those three answers lead to three completely different paths, and getting the first one right is what saves a high-value property from an expensive wrong turn.
The first step: separating the possibilities
Water loss has three broad sources, and they look identical from the surface:
- Evaporation and backwash. In a hot, windy climate, some water loss is normal. A proper assessment accounts for this before assuming there’s a leak at all.
- The equipment side. Pumps, filters, valves, and heater connections all sit on the pressurized side of the system. A weeping seal or a cracked fitting loses water to the equipment pad, not to the ground.
- The pool itself. A loss from the shell — through a crack, a fitting, or a joint — is a different order of problem and a different order of cost.
These are not the same issue, and the response to each is different. Confusing them is how a $500 fitting repair becomes a five-figure project — or how a real pool leak goes unfound because everyone assumed it was the equipment.
What an assessment does
Establish the baseline
How much is the water actually dropping, and over what period? With the pump on, and with it off? The pattern of the loss is itself diagnostic — a loss that only happens when the pump runs points to the pressurized plumbing; a loss that happens whether the pump is on or off points elsewhere.
Inspect the equipment side
The equipment pad is where most “pool leaks” actually are. We check the pump, the filter, the valves, and the connections for weeping, mineral deposits, and moisture — the physical evidence of where water has been going.
Isolate the pool side
With the equipment side ruled in or out, the pool side is assessed — the fittings, the tile, the shell — to determine whether the loss is coming from the pool itself. This is where a careful, methodical approach matters most, because the conclusion here determines everything that follows.
Clear next steps
Whatever the finding, you get a clear picture: what’s leaking, where, and what the realistic path forward is. If the leak is on the equipment side, that’s a repair we can take on. If it’s a structural pool leak, we’ll tell you plainly and point you to a licensed specialist — because that’s the right call, and a high-value property deserves the correct one.
Noticing more water loss than expected? Request an assessment and tell us how much the level is dropping and over how long. An honest first step beats an expensive guess.
